Mike Lowry

Professional Forester

With over a decade in the timber industry and natural resource education Mike has a wealth of experience to lean on. Mike grew up between Spokane and his family property in Priest River, learning to love the woods while tramping around Mt Spokane, Priest Lake and The Selkirks.  Mike was exposed to the timber industry at a young age, his great grandfather worked as a roadbuilder and his father was a millwright.  Our family has been supported by timber dollars in one way or the other since the 1890's.

Mike started his career with fuel reduction contracting and logging, before going on to complete a degree in Natural Resource Management in 2014.  In his career Mike worked for the USFS, WA DNR and a large consulting firm before stepping out on his own in 2021.

With Kaniksu Timber Mike has worked with landowners large and small, state and federal agencies as well as industrial timber companies.  Ha has managed fire restoration projects, timber harvests, fuel reduction, forest planning and reforestation in WA, ID, MT and AK.

Our Family.  Our Values.

Forestry Feeds Our Family.  Faith Directs Our Forestry.

We are Orthodox Christians raising children to love forests, love God and love each other.  We are directed by scripture to steward and protect our natural resources while utilizing them for our benefit.  We take an ecologically informed approach to forest management, with emphasis on improving wildlife habitat and tree health.  We always look for the best long term strategy of maximizing growth and yield.

These forests have provided for us for over a century and our children are counting on us to leave them a better resource than our parents left us.  Through commercial thinning, tree improvement cutting and advanced silviculture we are well on our way to establishing healthy, growing, fire resilient forests on our client properties.

What the heck is a Kaniksu?

Get to Know Us

Kaniksu is a Kalispell Indian word meaning "Black Robe."  It was used by the tribe and early settlers to refer to the Priest Lake Basin and associated forests.  We chose this name to honor our region's indigenous and pioneer history, as well as to honor Mike's family history logging and roadbuilding in the greater Kaniksu country.

Our logo, the 3 bar cross between the moose antlers is a play on St. Hubert's Cross.  St. Hubert, the patron of hunters and woodmen had a vision of the life giving cross while hunting, prompting him to give away his wealth and minister to the poor.  The 3 bar cross is typically associated with Eastern Orthodoxy (our faith) and the moose is a nod to our favorite local ungulate.
